Building Access with Terra Condominiums
Terra Condominiums is a 119-unit building in downtown Seattle. It boasts top-notch common areas, ocean views, and a variety of well-appointed floor plans. Terra employs individuals to provide a 24-hour concierge service, which is intended to be a security feature for the complex, as well as a convenience service for tasks like restaurant reservations.
Terra was concerned that the majority of the on-duty concierge's time was being spent tracking access requests from residents and guests. If the concierge was away from the desk, guests would have to wait in the lobby. Additionally, residents weren't always up to speed on the requirement for guests to go through the concierge for access. Last minute visits were time consuming to coordinate, and the popularity of the complex was suffering.
Starling IoT implemented a new system that dramatically reduced access duties for the concierge and provided residents and guests an intuitive method for building access. Each resident has access to the building's amenities via iOS/Android application. A resident can open the app and choose to Send Invites, as well as specify the visit window. A QR code is sent to each guest's mobile phone, email, or both. The QR code acts as a temporary pass, valid for a specified window of time.
At the entrance to the elevator, guests scan their QR code and enter the room number of the resident they're visiting as a passcode. Access is granted to the required floor and any common areas specified in the invite. As a backup, access can be still granted real-time through the concierge or an intercom-style system. Finally, permanent access can be granted to frequent visitors like dog walkers or relatives.
Residents agree that the new system is much simpler, and easier to use for short-notice visits. Concierge staff can focus on providing additional value to the building's owners and occupants, instead of checking identification at the door. Wait times for guests have been practically eliminated, and even food delivery is a much simpler process!
